Project Completed for North Wyke Research, Okehampton, Devon
North Wyke Research (NWR), formerly the Institute for Grassland and Environmental Research, was looking to replace fume cupboards originally installed by Hoare back in 1991. At the time, these were acquired 'second hand' from another site where Hoare had also installed. Despite having stood the test of time well, the fume cupboards had come naturally to the end of their working life.
The project also involved some laboratory reorganisation, based on company restructuring, including conversion of an existing laboratory for microbiological use.
An official tender process followed and after a careful selection process Hoare Laboratory Engineering Ltd was appointed to undertake the works.
Hoare's scope of works included the removal of the existing fume cupboards, benching modifications, provision of five BS EN 14175 approved fume cupboards, fume extract system modifications including fans, a ventilation system for the new Microbiology Lab and air conditioning. Hoare also undertook all associated building, electrical and mechanical works, which included the provision of an external bottled gas manifold/store with supplies to an internal calibration gas manifold. Additional builders work included welded sheet vinyl floor coverings, decorations, suspended ceilings and the creation of an entrance lobby for the new Microbiology Lab.
Being environmentally conscious NWR was keen to utilise any energy conservation methods possible. Hoare was able to offer a Variable Air Volume (VAV) system for the fume cupboards fully integrated with the supply and extract systems. In contrast to a Constant Air Volume (CAV) system, where the volume of air extracted and supplied in unchanged, this maintains the desired face velocity at any sash point. As the sash is lowered the volume of air required is reduced which in turn saves energy and reduces the ongoing running cost. |
